Changes abound for Wisconsin Drivers in 2010
As many of you have probably already heard, Wisconsin's budget that was passed this past year included sweeping changes in Wisconsin insurance law. These changes included, new minimum coverage amounts as well as insurance being mandatory for everyone. Here are a few highlights and what you need to do as a consumer to comply with these changes:
New UI/UIM minimum limits
Effective this past November, the minimum limits for UI (Uninsured Motorist) and UIM (Underinsured Motorist) were increased from 25/50 and 50/100 to 100/300. Medical payments were also increased from $1,000 to $10,000. While the UI/UIM coverages are mandatory, consumers can decline the $10,000 Medical Payments coverage if they wish.
New Minimum Liability coverages
Effective January 1st, 2010, all polices must have a minimum BI coverage of 50/100. This is an increase from the previous minimum of 25/50. In addition, minimum property damage coverage rose from $10,000 to $15,000 per vehicle.
Mandatory Insurance
Beginning June 1st of 2010, all registered vehicles on the road will be required to have insurance. This may come as a surprise to many of you, but Wisconsin was only one of two states in the nation that didn't have mandatory insurance, the other state was New Hampshire.
